Once your band has had sufficient practice and has put together a list of songs, it maybe time for your band to start playing some gigs. Make sure the band members are aware of the fact that the first few gigs would most probably have to be performed for free.
The first step towards getting a gig is putting together a press kit. A start-up press kit should include a cover page, introduction of the band, pictures, a list of the bands songs and equipment, contact, booking information, and a demo tape or CD. Once the band starts performing more frequently, you could include information such as newspaper or magazine clippings and reviews. Remember to create some business cards for the band, which can be handed out to those who are interested in the band’s music. When sending your press copy to venues, make sure you place it in an envelope that would stand out from the rest.
To create your own demo kit, you could use either four-track tape recorder or an eight-track CD burner. These items can easily be rented for a nominal fee. Make sure your demo includes three to four of your best songs. After you become more established, you should book for studio time and record a professional sounding demo tape.
Once you have created your press kit and demo, you are now ready to promote your band. Remember to stay positive. You must not let venues that may reject your band discourage you. Keep in mind that the whole process gives you a chance to grow, gain experience, and most of all, the opportunity to do something that the band is passionate about.
